European Biomass Pellet Market Remains Strong, Sustainable‑source Certification Becomes Critical for Exports

Europe remains the world’s largest consumption market for biomass pellets. Demand keeps growing from industrial power plants, district heating networks and residential heating sectors. Driven by EU renewable‑energy policies, many thermal power plants are retrofitted for coal‑biomass co‑firing, steadily pushing up import volume of industrial‑grade pellets.

Recently, EU trade regulations have become stricter. Imported biomass fuels are required to provide complete raw‑material traceability and proof of sustainable forest management. Certifications such as ENplus and FSC are gradually turning into essential access conditions for the European market. Buyers pay high attention to compliance of feedstock sources to prevent illegal forest materials from entering supply chains.

For project investors planning pellet production and export to Europe, stable performance of pellet‑making lines is not enough. Raw‑material screening, full traceability records and certification planning should be considered at the early‑project stage. Many newly‑built pellet plants arrange certification work during layout design to guarantee smooth market access.
